Guitar Playing Tip - Most diatonic scales consist of seven notes, with the most important note being the "root note", also known as the "tonic". This is the note from which the scale is derived. For example, consider the C major scale, which consists of the notes C-D-E-F-G-A-B. The C note is the first note in the scale, and as such, is considered to be the root note.
